After many many years of having Yellowstone on my bucket list, I finally made this dream a reality and was able to visit this extraordinary national park this past spring. Nothing could prepare me for the remarkable beauty and wonder of this special park. Hot Springs, gushing geysers, and scenic wonders that left me lost for words. It was definitely one for the books.
Out of the ten National Parks I have visited so far, Yellowstone made its way to the top of my list of favorites. I highly recommend to all of you adventurers. Thinking of planning a trip soon? I have put together some itinerary ideas to help you get started on your visit.
Book a spot in Gardiner. This is an adorable town just outside the North entrance of the park. The Gateway Cabins are awesome, but there are many stay options in town if you’re looking for hotels, camping, cabins, restaurants, and more.
Recommended places to check out while in town:
-Flying pig adventures horseback and water sports
-Tumble Weed Cafe and Bookstore
-Bears Brew coffee
-Begin in Lamar Valley or Hayden Valley and check out Yellowstone’s gorgeous landscapes and an incredible variety of wildlife. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope, and enjoy the animals from a safe distance. The grizzly’s are out there! Along with wolves, elk, pronghorn sheep, and moose.
Next, explore a theme, maybe some geology in depth by exploring Mammoth Hot Springs. Travertine terraces are found at Mammoth Hot Springs, where the interactions of hot water and limestone deep underground create chalk white travertine terraces at the surface.
-Drive to the famous star attractions like
Grand Prismatic Spring (the 3rd largest spring in the world and Yellowstone’s largest) and further down the road to Old Faithful viewpoint and walk around the Upper Geyser basin.
Falls you won’t want to miss!
-The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone River illustrates the parks complex geologic history and dramatic shapes. The upper and lower falls of the Yellowstone River add even more beauty to the mix.
-Gibbon Falls and Wraith falls are stunning waterfalls you can park and walk up to view right off the highway.
-Undine Falls
-Yellowstone Lake- The largest high elevation lake in the lower 48 states. Soaked up the spectacular views of West Thumb and the Absaroka Mountains from its shores.
-Explore the Hot Springs, mud pots, and geysers of the West Thumb Geyser Basin.
-Hike one of the local trails like the scenic Lake overlook near West Thumb.
Travel Tips:
-Tour as early as possible to avoid crowds.
-Always carry rain gear, extra clothes, food and water, bear spray, and other emergency equipment when venturing into backcountry.
-Please be respectful and pack out your trash and always practice Leave No Trace.
Happy Adventuring!
