With spring in full affect, I thought I would share one of my favorite National parks to visit during this vibrant season. Go wild over wildflowers and ocean views at Santa Cruz Island of Channel Islands National Park.
Santa Cruz is a beautiful island that offers gorgeous beaches, water sport recreation and a variety of hiking trails and campgrounds. Spring time is one of the best times to adventure this island and in honor of National Parks week, I’ve listed a few planning details/tips below to help guide you on a future trip to one of my favorite California National Parks.
Book ahead- Island Packers offers regularly scheduled boat ferries and trips out to Santa Cruz from Ventura Harbor. The ride takes a little over an hour to Scorpion Anchorage. Be aware that the boat ride can sometimes be rough on the way there (check weather for strong winds) and consider taking preventive measures and get a set of anti nausea bands prior to the ferry ride to prevent sea sickness. Even if you are not one to get seasick, I highly suggest taking something JIC! We paid the price big time on the way there so make dramamine your friend at least two hours before the ride. It helps tremendously!
Kayaking- you can book an adventure sea cave kayaking tour with sb adventure company at Scorpion Anchorage and explore the caves along the coast of the island.
Camping- book a camping spot at Scorpion Ranch campground through rec.gov. It’s the most accessible for a weekend trip. There is also the option to do hike-in backcountry camping on the island as well.
Hiking- Santa Cruz offers beautiful hiking trails ranging from an easy half-mile stroll to a more strenuous 10 mile loop. Make your way to the top of the ridge and be rewarded with expansive ocean views.
Food- there is no food on the island, so make sure you pack your own and bring plenty of snacks and drinks.
Please be respectful and pack out your trash while visiting and always practice Leave No Trace.
Happy adventuring!
